🤔 Episode 1 of our 6 part series on AI Agents
📺 Video: Kieran walks us through automations and AI agents from the start
🚀 Huge releases from Claude, ChatGPT + others
👩💻 What's the fuss about?
There's a lot of chatter (social media posts...) about AI Agents and we want to clear a few things up to help you understand.
What does 'AI Agent' really mean? And how is it different from the automations or workflows?
If you've never heard of automations, workflows or agents, never fear! We've made an intro video just for you, scroll down to watch it.
Think of it like this:
🍝 A workflow is a recipe. You follow steps in order, always the same way.
☕️ An automation is like a coffee machine. You press the button, and the same thing happens every time.
🤓 An agent, though, is more like an intern with initiative. You give them a goal, and they can figure out the best steps to get there — adapting as things change.
That flexibility is what makes agents exciting. They’re not just following scripts; they’re making decisions.
So...
📆 Over the next 6 weeks, we’ll break down the key components that make an AI agent work. By the end, you’ll understand the building blocks — and why they matter.
Here’s the roadmap:
1️⃣ Agent – the digital intern itself. 2️⃣ Goal – the outcome you set (“close the lead,” “summarise the report”). 3️⃣ Autonomy – how much freedom the agent has to decide steps. 4️⃣ Context – the background info it needs to act intelligently. 5️⃣ Tools – the apps or actions the agent can use. 6️⃣ Human in the Loop – you, the supervisor, guiding the process
We hope the explainers will be easy to digest with practical takeaways let's get started...
🤓 Explain Like I'm 5
Agents
Agents are software systems that let AI perform tasks independently on your behalf.
Unlike traditional software (e.g if this then that), agents can:
1️⃣ Reason 2️⃣ Plan 3️⃣ Act in a continuous loop
Under the hood though they are actually quite simple.
The LLM reasons: “What should I do now?”
The tools act: fetch data, send emails, update records.
The loop continues until the goal is done.
💡 Why this matters: Unlike automations or workflows, agents don’t need everything pre-planned. They bring adaptability to messy, human-shaped problems.
Agents capture our imaginations because they have the potential to take over a lot of the mundane, boring work we don't like doing.
"On the flipside, they also might take over the work we do like doing" ~ Kieran likes to remind us of this regularly
🚀 Examples
You might not realise it but you may be using agents all the time.

This was a brief overview of agents and next week we'll discuss the "Goal" component and why prompting is fundamental
In this 16 minute video, Kieran will talk you through the difference between automations and AI agents from a complete beginner's perspective. He will then show you how to build your own AI agent in Zapier, which is the most beginner-friendly agent platform we've tried.
You’ll learn the difference between simple automations, adding AI for smarter decision-making, and building full AI agents that connect Gmail, Trello, Google Docs, and Google Calendar.
We’ll also test the agent live and explore advanced features like Slack integration, knowledge sources, and agent teams.
👉 Why it matters: Claude’s new model reports stronger results in coding, reasoning, and using a computer to complete tasks. For you, this means more reliable autocompletion, better step‑by‑step problem solving, and smoother agent workflows that can click, type, and handle files with fewer mistakes. It’s available across popular platforms today, with pricing unchanged.
👉 Why it matters: Login, databases, files, and backend are handled automatically with Lovable Cloud (they still use Supabase). Lovable AI, powered by Google Gemini, lets you add AI features without setup or API keys and is free until 5 October. Useful if you’ve been stitching together tools; this aims to reduce complexity so you can ship faster. Early builders report real revenue, but treat those figures as directional, not guarantees.
👉 Why it matters: ChatGPT now supports buying directly in chat from select U.S. merchants, starting with Etsy and soon Shopify brands. It’s designed for simple, single‑item purchases, with multi‑item carts coming. Payments run through the merchant’s existing systems, and OpenAI has open‑sourced the protocol co‑developed with Stripe so developers can integrate without overhauling backends. This means it's even more important to sort out your AI search strategy.
