Open source refers to software (or other projects) where the underlying code is publicly accessible, downloadable, free to use, and can be modified or shared by anyone. Think of it like a recipe published online: everyone can see the ingredients (code), download it and self-host it, tweak it to suit their needs, or share their version with others.

Examples you may already be familiar with include Wikipedia's MediaWiki, Firefox, Audacity and Wordpress.

🤔 Why is it important right now?

Deepseek, a widely popular new reasoning model, comparable with OpenAI's most powerful models; is open source. This matters because part of the OpenAI shtick is that the most expensive models are hard to replicate. Not any more.

😊 What you need to know as a non techie?

1️⃣ Cost Saving While there's still costs with web-hosting, training, maintenance & storage, the underlying code is available to use without licensing fees. With AI assisted coding there to help; non-technical founders can experiment with more ease.

2️⃣ Flexibility The code can be edited as to exactly you require without potential platform limitations or vendor lock-in giving you more control over your software stack. If the code base is popular you also should find developers easier.

3️⃣ Speed to Market Take something that is already built and then leverage proven components and community-driven features. More advanced models will appear, increasing competition and improving the ecosystem more generally.

👉 This matters because Europe is still in the game (shout out to Loveable again)! It's a struggle to compete with the US behemoths, but Mistral's speed is impressive. The AI summit appears to have annoyed the doomers & optimists.

⭐️ Bubble's fresh AI app feature; Pete from NoCodeFusion has found a way to build a full stack app in Bubble with just prompts

👉 This matters because Bubble's community is very strong and they are begging for innovation. This points to the trend of hybrid building of prompting and tweaking between visual building and AI capabilities.

⭐️ Replit agents is free & Google Gemini 2.0 is released with 'thinking' mode that includes apps access (e.g Youtube, Maps)

👉 This matters because Gemini is cheap, plus leveraging Google's suite of apps brings new opportunities for builders. Replit has a super strong community if you're just starting out. Go try it ​
